“The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction.” –Proverbs 1:7
What do you fear? What do you think of when you hear the word “fear”? What does it mean for you to fear God? I don’t know about you, but I’ve always thought of fear as a bad thing. In my mind, the word fear is associated with negative emotions. I think of things like being afraid for the safety of myself and the people close to me. I don’t like to be afraid.
“The fear of the LORD is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death.” –Proverbs 14:27
Since we started our study of Proverbs on Wednesday nights, I’ve been thinking about what it means to fear God and how I may need to change my thinking about it. Growing up I often heard it said that we should have a “healthy fear” of God. But since I thought of fear as a bad thing that never really made sense to me until the past few years. The truth is fear is one of the strongest emotions we can have, and therefore can be one of the greatest motivators for the way that we live. So it makes sense that the Proverbs talks so much about fearing God when it is a book about how to live wisely. But the question is this: Why do you fear God?

My soul finds rest in God alone.
Psalm 62:1
Why? Why does my soul rest only in God?
Because with God I never feel the need to be anyone except myself. I am not tempted to impress Him or to try to make myself look good in His eyes. He knows me.
With God I feel no reason to be jealous, resentful, bitter or envious. I am safe from the negative emotions that kill the spirit and rot the bones.

Help Wanted!
By David Laing
When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd. Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.”
Matthew 9:36-38
Lord, send out the workers! For the West Region of the Columbia Church of Christ, this has been the theme of a three week time of prayer and fasting that will be concluding today. Now, I must admit that I’m pretty psyched to run out and bite into a tasty dessert right after church but what excites me even more is the sense that our hearts have been prepared to be better workers for the Lord than we were three weeks ago. The situation in God’s Kingdom is quite the opposite of what we observe in our economy: there is no shortage of work but a dire shortage of workers!
